Special because: Arebaokeng means 'let us nurture them'
‘Let us nurture them’. That's the meaning of Arebaokeng and the shortest summary of its activities. In the ruthless world of AIDS and poverty in Tembisa, Arebaokeng is a safe home where 177 children are nurtured. They are assured of healthy food, guidance, attention and love on a daily base.
It is not a safe place for children to grow up in: the townships of Tembisa, near Jo’burg. Poverty, aids, violence, drugs and alcohol abuse are leaving children with little chances. They often live in small, dark and crowded shacks, their parents don’t earn any income, they don’t qualify for governments child grants, they experience lack of materials and drop out of school early in their educational life.
In this harsh reality MAMA Flora started a program for the most vulnerable children. She registered her OVC program in 2004, with the mission to give every child a happy, safe and memorable childhood by creating a safety net for them. At this moment 177 children find their way to the center of Arebaokeng every day. The center is a safe haven were they are welcomed, loved, stimulated and helped to build a brighter future.
Arebaokeng is working with 6 programmes:
Arebaokeng has big ambitions to expand the program further and make a bigger impact on their children’s lives. One of the wishes of MAMA Flora is for example a suitable place to professionalize the Youth Programme, which is so important if you really want to break out of the cycle of poverty.
Meet MAMA Flora: the thriving force behind Arebaokeng. In her work as a nurse, Flora saw the immense need that aids was causing. When she was 50 and her own children were out of the house, she decided to take action. She started with a hospice in 2000. In the years that followed she met many children who were not going to school because they had to take care of sick mothers and who were left behind once their mothers died. Her passion grew to make a lasting difference in their lives! In 2004 her OVC program was a fact.
MAMA Flora sees opportunities wherever she looks and managed to build up a beautiful program out of nothing. She says: “There is always more to do. But I am very grateful for the children that aren’t short of anything today because of Arebaokeng. They are building a brighter future! The most visible example of the impact of our work is the very first child that I took under my wings in 2004, little 11-months old Zanele that was alone on the world already. You should see him today, this big boy doing very well in Grade 9. He is going to be just fine!”
