Children of the Dawn - Mpumaze

Project: Children of the Dawn (COTD) - Mpumaze
    MAMA:
    Nabila
    Started in: 2006
    Partner since: 2012
    Location: Mpumaze, Kwazulu-Natal
Number of children: 86 (supported by MAMAS), 146 (total)
Special because: Multiple children from the COTD programme are now going to University!

The area of Mpumaze is beautiful, warm and hilly but also very underdeveloped. Over 60 percent of the children live in motherless families, many of which are child-headed families. Many children are infected with HIV. They lack medical attention, sufficient and healthy food, proper sanitation, stimulation and attention.

Children of the Dawn Mpumaze works together with the Mpumaze Primary School: a public school with over 900 students. The school refers vulnerable children to the programme. Children of the Dawn offers 146 children healthy nutrition, medical care, after-school care and fun and informative activities. The MAMAS also offer counselling in the home environment which indirectly helps another 500 children.

Apart from basic care and support, Children of the Dawn has 4 other pillars: Children in Action which provides ongoing fun and educative activities for children up to 13 years of age, My Future, My Responsibility, a guidance and mentoring programme for teenagers, Sport for Good which provides opportunities to take part in unusual sports, and Support to Tertiary Students. This year, the first student to grow out of the programme graduated from the University of Kwazulu-Natal, completing a Teaching Degree.

Children of the Dawn started in 2002 as a pilot-project to support mainly communities in the remote rural areas in taking care of vulnerable children. Now, the project has grown into a professional initiative which operates in eight different places in 5 of the 9 provinces of South-Africa, namely: Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State, the Eastern Cape and Kwazulu-Natal.

Children's Fund MAMAS supports 4 of Children of the Dawn’s projects: Matatiele and Mpumaze on a big scale and Ermelo and Lenyenye on a smaller scale.
